Saints u7 @ Wardle JFC
The Junior Hoops u7 Saints came a strong second in the Williams Rochdale Champions Cup at Wardle JFC this weekend with some eye-catching performances across the tournament.
The Saints stormed through the group stages scoring 15 and conceding none. Goals came from across the team including a bullet header from Alfie, a series of predatory finishes from Leighton, cool strikes and assists from Teddy and a rocket free kick from Oakley. A special shout has to go to Super Tommy B in goals and the defensive rock Oscar who kept the opponents out and allowed the rest of the team to play with real freedom.
Finishing top of their group earned the Saints a quarter-final place against the hosts Wardle. A blistering start saw Teddy and Oakley link up three times to take a commanding lead before the hosts battled back. The secret weapon (Alfie’s 50m throws) set up more chances for the Hoops as they stretched their lead to secure a semifinal spot against Elton & Walshaw.
Despite the weather taking a turn for the worst the Saints started the semi strongly with Teddy and Leighton linking up to allow our very own back post bandit to slam home from a yard out! Oakley made it two before E&W fought back and gained a foothold in the game. The Saint’s defence marshalled by Oscar and Alfie held firm before the team found another gear with a worldly from Oaks and Teddy rounding the game off with a calm finish to set up a final with De La Salle.
Unfortunately for the Saints the final proved a game too far. Despite a valiant effort they were defeated but left the tournament with their heads held high and well set for the new season ahead.
